THE REAL WORLD OF MAGAZINES:

You’ll learn what photo editors really want from photographers, and who really makes the photo decisions. You’ll get valuable advice on how to present yourself to the magazines, how to create an unforgettable promo card, tips about the business end of working in the magazine world, and strategies for working in a pressure-driven, deadline environment.

More than just a primer on how to break into editorial photography, this seminar gives you an insider’s view into how the industry operates, and how photographers fit into the publishing equation. You will walk away with specific steps you can take to begin your job search, target your audience, and build a Rolodex of potential clients.

HOW TO TELL A STORY THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHS:

Telling a story is as much an art for the photographer as for the writer. When there is limited space, selecting the photographs that best illustrate a narrative can be a challenge. This seminar shows you how to distill the essence of a story into one sentence, and how to create a storytelling flow with photographs. You’ll work through specific exercises that will teach you how to edit your own work with clarity and precision. Using real examples from successful photo essays you will see how the photographer selected the photographs to propel the story, and what strategies were used in making that selection. This course can give essential information to anyone who needs to tell a story through photographs, including wedding photographers, photojournalists, and even hobbyists looking to build a scrapbook.

ANATOMY OF AN ASSIGNMENT: FROM PHOTO EDITOR TO PHOTOGRAPHER AND BACK:

Have you ever picked up a magazine and wondered how the photographer was chosen for a photo assignment? Do you wonder what it takes to get your photograph into a magazine? This seminar will go behind the curtain to show you how photographers and photo editors really work together to create a successful story. You will learn what decisions are made even before hiring a photographer, what is expected of both parties, and how to handle unexpected challenges, such as when the focus of the story shifts, or your cameras are lost. You’ll get valuable strategies for dealing with changing deadlines, and practical tips for making the assignment a success. Using real examples from real assignments, the seminar will talk about the rewards and challenges for both the photo editor and photographer. With tips learned in this seminar you can enhance your chances of getting yourself a real magazine assignment.
